Internship within a R&D department, where I performed numerical simulations on the topic of "flotation". Flotation is the removal of inclusions (particles which degrade the steel) from the steel by means of bubbling: Gas bubbles are injected, to which inclusions may attach or they may be entrained by the wake of the bubbles. Consequently, the inclusions will rise up and eventually leave the steel.The present research was about setting up a numerical model in OpenFOAM from scratch to simulate flotation by a single bubble. The goal (for future interns) is to eventually arrive at physical models which allow for resolving the full-scale of industrial instrumentation, which may be used to optimize the process. As for now, I developed the cases/code to be used for developing those physical models, and I came to qualitative conclusions (since that is what time allowed me to do) as to what such a physical model should look like.
