Turning numbers into stories and data into action is what I've done for more than thirty-five years, whether in the actuarial, financial risk management, education policy, or political arena. I speak "bilingually" between both coders and data miners and with executives who need the big picture and the recommendation for action. I'm very creative and perceptive to what each client needs.

I work with our Experience Studies, Data Science, Underwriting, and Pricing Teams to monitor mortality and lapses and develop assumptions to use in the pricing and valuation of our life products. In addition I work with several project teams to ensure that we are prepared to have our products and new business processes ready to handle challenges and opportunities that arise.

Extracted all the knowledge and patterns in mortality and lapse experience of our business to enable better management of that risk in our Pricing and Financial Modeling teams. Worked closely with Marketing as well to acquire data from clients and to leverage that data into optimal pricing levels for all parties and to help those clients understand and monitor that risk.

Led an actuarial team through premium persistency and lapse studies to update recommended assumptions for pricing and modeling teams and actuarial review committee of a large life insurance company. Also made recommendations for mortality improvement assumptions to use in projections.Rolled up the sleeves and played query point man for data migration project for a major reinsurer. Reviewed data accumulation for a consolidated mortality experience study.

Priced reinsurance opportunities with clients needing mortality risk protection. Weighed all aspects of the requests, including mortality experience, lapse projections, product design, and the market competitiveness of the client to offer proposals that met our company's profit and risk objectives and unlocked our clients' ability to deliver financial protection to their customers.Headed the delivery of experience analysis and consultation to key HLR clients and our pricing team. Managed integration of client experience data into our own data warehouses.Managed and trained a team that conducted experience studies used to position competitive pricing quotes and to calibrate our own proprietary mortality assessment tools. No longer is compensation solely based on longevity and credits. It now includes performance evaluations and market factors. While course content is certainly a foundation of learning, so is applying that knowledge into deeper thought that requires creativity and critical thinking. Decision making has been pushed further to the school level and to the parent level.There are also more choices than ever for parents to determine the right education model for their child. From traditional neighborhood schools to charters to online and magnet schools DCSD provides an array of options unmatched by any other school district and delivered through more than 80 different schools. And soon that menu may include partnerships with private schools.During all this change, I am proud that we increased the already high on-time graduation rate, increased ACT scores and AP and IB credits, retained over 95% of our best teachers, restored the district's financial health to one earning a high credit rating, and returned the district to the top academic designation of Accredited with Distinction.

The FOC is a committee that reports to the directors of the Douglas County School Board. Its charge is to report and advise on issues of:• Budget (Operating and Capital); • Accounting, Audit, and Financial Reporting (Internal and External);• Banking (Commercial and Investment); and • Other fiscal matters as assigned by the Board, including but not limited to, assessment of federal and state legislation, policies, and regulations in respect of the fiscal operations of the District.

The District Advisory Committee (DAC) is comprised of parents, citizens, administrators, and teachers of Douglas County. This group meets formally monthly, but many other times and ways in between. Its duties include reviewing and making recommendations to the Board of Education concerning: • School Improvement Plans • Improving educational achievement in the schools • Maximizing graduation rates • Increasing the ratings of the school’s accreditation category • Prioritization of expenditures of School District monies • AccountabilityThe DAC also cooperatively determines with the Board at least annually: • The areas of study by the DAC • Applications for waivers from state laws, rules or regulations • The adoption, review, and revision of content standardsThe DAC: • Reviews each charter school application prior to its consideration by the Board of Education. • Consults with the Board of Education prior to the Board’s adopting, implementing or revising a safe school plan • Provides recommendations to the Board of Education regarding whether to impose a transportation fee and any proposed fee schedule prior to the Board’s adoption of a resolution to collect a transportation fee • Cooperates with the Board of Education’s goals and processes in informing and involving the DAC and SACs concerning the School District’s accreditation contract • Provides written alternatives and their implications concerning the Board’s Ends issues, including their costs and priorities • Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be requested by the Board or required by Board policy and comply with all Superintendent policies and directives

Managed experience analysis and consulting services for high-value clients. This included mortality and lapse experience studies, X-factor hypothesis testing, and review of mortality assumptions used for pricing. Also worked on calibration of Scottish Re's proprietary mortality assessment tool. Provided oversight and assistance on internal review of experience studies.

Created new system for analyzing client mortality experience. Customized tool so clients and internal pricing teams alike could identify emerging trends, drill further into data, and make intelligent decisions on managing their risk.

Taught eighth grade math, including pre-algebra, algebra and geometry for gifted students. Coached MATHCOUNTS team.

Ran my own consulting services company that provided actuarial and data management expertise. I worked with actuarial software (AXIS, TAS) and with Microsoft Access and SQL Server. Developed applications for a major actuarial consulting firm to warehouse employment and salary history and to manage feeds into valuation system. Created exception reports for outlier information; designed and created forms and data integrity rules to better manage data entry.

Developed and maintained data warehouse of life insurance premiums, product features, and underwriting requirements for the individual term and universal life market. Provided consultation to product development clients. Edited quarterly publication for those clients.

Priced reinsurance proposals in traditional life insurance market. Worked with underwriting and marketing team to build relationships with clients, assess mortality risk, and provide solutions for their mortality risk management needs. Was lead actuary on one of two teams during high growth period where sales increased from $15 billion to $62 billion of face amount annually.Reviewed treaties and negotiated to reflect mutually agreed terms. Responsible for periodic review of profitability of each account.

Projected account profitability for 3-5 year plan. Identified potential "problem" accounts. Worked with Valuation Department to report reserves. Created and implemented new system to track key metrics for each account. Assisted with the pricing of new quotes.

Managed rate review and experience testing of health insurance products for small group market (1-100 lives).Developed universal life insurance product for the upper income market. Work included pricing, sensitivity testing, filing with state insurance departments, marketing to field force.

Self-taught to use "new" personal computers and "revolutionary" application: Lotus 1-2-3 (the ancestor of Excel).Developed several applications for the Policyowner Services department that automated and streamlined what had been a manual process.
