About Kevin Larsen

Life is full of risk. Making good choices and developing great strategies leverages that risk into opportunity. Knowing how to read and interpret data allows you to discover the best choices. I turn data into information that helps people make better decisions.I love to explain things. I know what connects with different audiences. People remember stories. I use pictures and processes to turn problems into stories worth telling, remembering, and solving.I enjoy building long-term relationships with people. Problems are temporary. People are fun. Relationships last.I've injected this energy and curiosity into actuarial analysis and I've devoted it to other causes, such as education policy, school finance, and numerous volunteer endeavors.

Turning numbers into stories and data into action is what I've done for more than thirty-five years, whether in the actuarial, financial risk management, education policy, or political arena. I speak "bilingually" between both coders and data miners and with executives who need the big picture and the recommendation for action. I'm very creative and perceptive to what each client needs.

  • Douglas County School District
    President, Board Of Education
Douglas County School District Nov 2011 - Nov 2015
    Castle Rock, Co, Us
President, December 2013 - November 2015Vice President, March 2013 - November 2013Board Director, District C, November 2011 - March 2013Served as one of seven elected members of the body that set policy and vision and then vested in our superintendent the responsibility to execute the policies, implement the core values and strategic priorities, and deliver DCSD's commitments to students, parents and families, employees, and the community.During the four years I spent on the board our district transformed the delivery and approach to education. No longer is compensation solely based on longevity and credits. It now includes performance evaluations and market factors. While course content is certainly a foundation of learning, so is applying that knowledge into deeper thought that requires creativity and critical thinking. Decision making has been pushed further to the school level and to the parent level. There are also more choices than ever for parents to determine the right education model for their child. From traditional neighborhood schools to charters to online and magnet schools DCSD provides an array of options unmatched by any other school district and delivered through more than 80 different schools. And soon that menu may include partnerships with private schools.During all this change, I am proud that we increased the already high on-time graduation rate, increased ACT scores and AP and IB credits, retained over 95% of our best teachers, restored the district's financial health to one earning a high credit rating, and returned the district to the top academic designation of Accredited with Distinction.
