Founding director of the Cetacean Research & Rescue Unit (CRRU) charity in northeast Scotland since 1997. In co-operation with universities, research institutions and international environmental agencies, principal studies focus on the coastal cetaceans frequenting the Moray Firth, providing baseline scientific data for the adoption of long-term management measures and conservation strategies for their protection. The charity also operates the only specialist response team in Scotland for live-stranded whales and dolphins. The fully-equipped team (scientists, veterinarians and qualified volunteers) are skilled and experienced to act and advise at the scene of a stranding with first aid, veterinary treatment and refloatation procedures as required.

An honorary appointment at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation. Departmental duties include guest lecturing and supervising post-graduate student theses.

International

Qualified JNCC MMO/PSO since 2000 (independent MMO/PSO course provider (JNCC and BOEM) since 2021), with experience in 2D, 3D, 4D, OBC/OBN, site surveys, ROV, AUV, high resolution/environmental baseline surveys, plus mitigation for piling activities and underwater explosions (UXO, open-water and well-head decommissioning) in the UK, Norway, Morocco, Libya, Greece, the Falkland Islands, UAE, Cyprus, Angola and Egypt for a number of end-clients (e.g. BP, TGS, Nopec, Repsol, PGS, Amerada Hess, Noble Energy, Kosmos Energy, GXT, ADNOC, DONG Energy, Vattenfall, ExxonMobil, Total E&P, ENI, Tullow Oil). Further working experience as an Environmental Client Representative. Meticulous in data collection, recording and report writing. Excellent communication and liaison skills.

The JNCC-Approved Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) Training Course introduces the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) guidelines for minimising the risk of injury to marine mammals from geophysical surveys, piling and explosives operations in the offshore petrochemical and renewables sectors. Coordinating the national rescue effort for sick, injured or stranded marine mammals in Scotland, conducting national training courses for the public, professionals, university and veterinary students in theoretical and practical first aid, rehabilitation and refloatation procedures, and assisting the Scottish Agricultural College with the identification, recovery of and biopsies from deceased whales and dolphins.
