Led Genentech’s Environmental Sustainability Program, developing sustainability strategy and goals, collecting and analyzing data to support those goals, and communicating performance to internal and external stakeholders. Responsible for producing Genentech’s annual sustainability report. Managed Varian's Data Systems business during the transition from Varian's Star Workstation product to the Galaxie client/server Data System. Galaxie controls multiple vendors' laboratory instruments, manages data, and helps labs achieve regulatory compliance.

Managed R&D for all instruments developed in Walnut Creek (gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry) and associated data systems. Drove the development of a new generation GC, reducing time to market compared to past projects, then managed the evolution of the new GC into products for the MS, LC, and Micro-GC product lines.

Managed software development, hardware development, and product marketing for all gas chromatography instrumentation. After the acquisition of a GC company in the Netherlands, managed a joint development project to adapt their autosampler to Varian's GC, resulting in significant cost savings and setting the stage for future collaborative efforts.

Manager of all software development (embedded and PC-based) at Varian Chromatography Systems. Drove usability improvements in Data Handling products, working with Sales and Marketing to define next generation products. Involved in due diligence for the Rainin LC acquisition, and then in integrating their products into Varian's existing product line.

Managed Marketing, R&D, Technical Support, and Manufacturing functions for all Data Handling products plus the Parts and Supplies (consumables) business. Served as ISO 9000 coordinator for 2 years, streamlining the documentation management, and passing all external audits. Involved in Malcom Baldridge quality award application, defining and tracking metrics.

Managed Workstation Engineering Department. Worked closely with Marketing group to define the features of new software versions.

Software team leader and project leader for Star Workstation products, Varian's first Windows-based control software for its chromatography instruments. As software team leader, responsible for software builds, project schedules, task assignments, bug tracking.

Developed expert systems (artificial intelligence) for government contracts. Worked on the development of Titan's Knowledge-Based Engineering System Toolset (KBEST). Worked in C language running under UNIX and MS-DOS.

Worked on Varian's 3400 gas chromatograph, adding embedded data handling capabilities to the instrument.

Worked on several projects for Litton's portable Briefcase Terminal, a ruggedized multiprocessor based communications and display terminal. Responsible for programming the touch-screen display and serial I/O processors.

Taught physiology laboratory courses. Helped develop an Apple II- based system to record chimpanzee sign language, and trained others in the use of the computer.
