This was a pretty epic career break to say the least. I pretty much completely stopped programming. Went through a separation from my then wife and my kids. I travelled all over the country, went to fancy restaurants, was accused of a number of horrific crimes. You know, the usual. By May of 2021, post covid, post dealing with the legal system, I moved back to Michigan. I got really interested in programming again. Cut out a huge number of former colleagues from my network that I concluded were low character or otherwise untrustworthy, unethical, predatory, sociopathic or generally a waste of time.Got very excited with a new outlook on both my professional and personal life.

I really liked this company but unfortunately a job at this point in my life didn’t work out.

Frank Gibeau closed down the VR projects I was working on in a valiant effort to show effective leadership for Q4 cost savings. HR treated me quite well in that they smiled often during my impromptu exit interview. I stayed interested in VR/AR for the next year, attending WWDC, Gamesbeat with Dean Takahashi and GDC and many VR conferences.Never could find an angle with VR that worked or that I believed in, so I guess in the end Frank Gibeau was right, which I suppose has to happen from time to time.I did some contract work, some of which was with a company where the founder had modeled herself after Elizabeth Holmes. At the time that was very fashionable. Yikes.It was a time of disillusionment and realizing how many lies most of the tech industry tells themselves and each other.
