About Karri D. Folks
Background: I earned my B.S. in Animal and Poultry Science with an emphasis in farm animal behavior and management from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL. My interest in behavioral ecology burgeoned when I volunteered as an animal husbandry intern for the Montgomery Zoo in Alabama. I received two masters degrees in molecular genetics and biology respectively each with a related focus in animal welfare. My interest in evolutionary ecology and education developed when I worked as informal science educator for Natant Marsh education center where I worked to develop experiential science education curricula for groups of students, guests, and volunteers. Research Interests/Focus: Through my collective experiences, I have united my passions for molecular biology, animal behavior/welfare, and zoo and aquarium studies into my current research focus. I am interested in investigating the role and importance of zoo environments in conservation efforts, informal public education, and animal welfare. My dissertation research focuses on the nocturnal activity of a troop of Japanese macaques. I am using video footage and behavioral observations (on both humans and non-human primates), and to examine primate animal welfare in captive environments. My skills include: •Certified training and experience in interdisciplinary research in molecular and genetic biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, and biological anthropology•Ability to design, implement, and analyze scientific and observational experiments with precision•Strong oral communication skills acquired through conference presentations and teaching experience•Excellent writing skills developed from publishing journal articles and co-authoring research proposals
Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Research, Microsoft Word, and 15 others.
