Postdoctoral Research Associate
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Post-doctoral Researcher with Dr. Zuend and Dr. Preston. Research Project: A Reduced form Chemical Thermodynamic ModelThis model reduction project involved simplify a highly accurate and therefore computationally expensive simulation of organic molecules distributing between a gas and particle phase. The highly accurate model was used to generate fitting data for the simplified model, as well as a guide in the model development process. The simplified mode utilized deep neural networks to remove iterative loops and identify transition points. The end result was a computationally simple model that experimentalist and climate modelers can easily use and understand.Science Focus:In Dr. Zuend’s group, I am developing computationally efficient numerical models of atmospheric aerosols using complexity reduction and deep learning techniques. The overarching goal is to make the next generation of aerosol thermodynamic models. These models are used in large-scale simulations of the atmosphere to predict regional air pollution and the long-term impacts of climate change. In Dr. Preston's group, I am extending my previous optical tweezers analysis techniques for ellipsoid droplets. These methods are used to make dynamic measurements of surface tension and viscosity. These properties are needed for high fidelity models of particle pollution.
Researcher Phd Candidate
Graduate Student Researcher, Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Atmospheric Particles Studies Advisors: Dr. Neil Donahue and Dr. Ryan Sullivan.Research Project:Cavity Resonances are spectral fingerprints that can identify the properties of a resonating cavity. This project involved matching the observed optical resonances to a droplet of unknown size and refractive index. The resonance frequencies are characterized by one discrete and six continuous variables for a two-layer droplet. I used variable interdependence to reduce the variable search space and time-series analysis to reduce the number of global fits needed. The resulting algorithm was published in a peer-reviewed journal and facilitated novel experimental results that were subsequently published in two more journal articles.Scientific Focus:Instrumentation (optical tweezers) development for biphasic measurements. Development of high-performance parallel and GPU programming for inverse problem optimization. Research mentoring of four undergraduate students.
Post-Baccalaureate Researcher
Earth and Environmental Sciences Division Advisors: Scientist Dr. Allison Aiken and Senior Scientist Dr. Manvendra Dubey Science Focus:Field Deployment of trace gas and aerosol particle instrumentation. Research into optical properties of mixed sources of black and brown carbon aerosol, including wildfires and urban locations.
Undergraduate Researcher
Michigan Technological University's Environmental Optics Laboratory Advisor: Dr. Claudio MazzoleniAutomated filter collector development. Study of the morphology and mixing state absorbing aerosols.
