Profile bio

About Khaled Hashad

I am a thermal science associate at Exponent. My expertise are in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, statistical analysis, machine learning, aerosol science, air quality, and atmospheric science. I solve problems related to the thermal management of consumer products, electronics, batteries, and biomedical devices. In addition, I perform failure analysis and prevention for mechanical systems and root cause investigations of fires.Prior to joining Exponent, I was a PhD Candidate working with Dr. Max Zhang at the Energy and Environment lab at Cornell University. I worked on optimizing urban green designs (vegetation) to mitigate traffic-related air pollution. I used CFD to assess the pollutant reduction of novel urban green designs by analyzing the physical mechanisms by which the vegetation barriers reduce pollutants and provided guidelines for optimal barrier designs. I created machine learning models trained on CFD data to capture the effects of vegetation on pollutant behavior downwind of the barrier. I also developed the first dispersion and deposition model that parameterizes the Gaussian plume equations to describe the impact of vegetation on near-road pollutant deposition and dispersion. Leveraging my expertise in aerosol science and CFD, I also studied airborne virus transmission to help understand the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in indoor environments. I helped develop a validated CFD model that captures the intricate behavior of droplets and aerosols in indoor environments such as deposition, evaporation, and interaction with the air flow. I also have experience evaluating the heat transfer of photovoltaic solar panels and how they affect the local microclimate and utilizing CFD to model the thermal management of batteries for electric vehicles using phase changing material.

Phd Candidate

Ithaca, New York, United States

The focus of my PhD is on optimizing urban green infrastructure, vegetation, to mitigate traffic related air pollution. I conduct CFD simulations using both RANS and LES models to assess various vegetative barrier designs. There are two main aspects to my research. First, is design related where my simulations help provide guidelines to the optimal barrier.
