In addition to my scientific work, I enjoyed a leadership role within the laboratory and relished the opportunity to mentor trainees and support their careers.Core innovations from my postdoctoral work include the ROSALIND platform (published in Nature Biotechnology and Nature Chemical Biology) and cell-free biosensors for the detection of a waterborne pollutants and contaminants (articles in ACS Synthetic Biology and reviewed in npj Clean Water). Our work has been featured in numerous media outlets and led to the formation of Stemloop, Inc.

I performed doctoral research in the lab of Donald H. Burke (burkelab.missouri.edu) in the Department of Biochemistry and Bond Life Sciences Center at the University of Missouri. My dissertation work resulted in publications that span bioinformatics, virology, drug delivery, and biosensing. I developed and published the first easy-to-use and open-source bioinformatic toolkit for the analysis of high-throughput DNA sequencing data from combinatorial selections (“FASTAptamer”), which is the most widely cited bioinformatic toolkit in the field and remains in active use and development. I coupled my work in bioinformatics with directed evolution (i.e., aptamer selections) to accelerate the identification and characterization of RNA broad-spectrum and base-modified inhibitors of HIV-1, and to perform deep mutational scanning of a viral glycoprotein.As a Ph.D. student, I also developed the first genetically-encoded visualization tool (“Split-Broccoli”) for monitoring RNA-RNA hybridization in living cells, and applied these tools to study the targeted delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics to cancer cell lines.
