Recent events have demonstrated that Earthquake Induced Liquefaction Disasters (EILDs) are responsible for tremendous structural damages and fatalities causing in some cases half of the economic loss caused by earthquakes. With the causes of liquefaction being substantially acknowledged, it is important to recognize the factors that contribute to its occurrence, to estimate hazards, then to practically implement the most appropriate mitigation strategy considering the susceptibility of the site to liquefaction, the type and size of the structure. The LIQUEFACT project, funded by the EU within the H2020 – DRS 2015 call (Research Innovation Action), is a collaborative project involving 11 different partners from 6 different countries (UK, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Norway and Turkey) and addresses the mitigation of risks to EILD events in European communities with a holistic approach. The project deals not only with the resistance of structures to EILD events, but also with the resilience of the collective urban community in relation to their quick recovery from an occurrence. The LIQUEFACT project sets out to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of EILDs, the applications of the mitigation techniques, and the development of more appropriate techniques tailored to each specific scenario, for both European and worldwide situations.

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL formerly CPSL) is an organisation within the School of Technology dedicated to working with leaders from business, government and civil society on the critical global challenges of the 21st century.I previously worked within the Business Platforms Team, which focussed on issues where business can have a significant impact on policy and business practice and where collective action is needed. Two of my main areas of involvement included CISL's Leadership Groups that help senior practitioners identify what needs to change within their sector or system, and take practical action to achieve this with their peers, and CISL's collaboratories which are time-bound, problem-solving groups focussing on particular sustainability challenges.I specifically worked across 2 teams:Climate Change - which brings together business leaders from major UK, EU and international companies who see the need for greater urgency and ambition from policy makers on climate change and the creation of a low carbon economy.Natural Capital - a major business-led programme focusing on practical action and policy influence. It brings together influential companies with a global reach, working to address the impacts of ecosystems and natural capital loss and degradation on business, customers and wider society.
