Served as part of a team of BoDs to fulfill the Board's fiduciary responsibilities by setting and monitoring the Company's strategy, while ensuring the integrity of the company's reported financial information, internal controls, as well as risk management strategies.

Duties and responsibilities included the implementation of good corporate governance and effective risk management of the Board. Mr. Mampeule was charged with providing sound leadership and strategic direction, the management of key strategy objectives, including the development and implementation of strategy proposals, identifying and monitoring key risk areas and key performance indicators of the business. Other duties included ensuring appropriate running of the company’s operations and strengthen the company’s internal controls. Mr Mampeule was the public face of the company to the media and the public. He recommended policy and strategy options, co-ordinated efforts leading to the approval of annual financial statements, and proposed capital raising alternatives.

In addition to managing, facilitating and overseeing the implementation of good corporate governance and effective risk management, Mr Mampeule was also responsible for presenting the Board with a growth strategy for the company, including achievable business plans and budgets to support the strategy. He ensured that the company’s day-to-day affairs were appropriately supervised and controlled, company bank accounts maintained, and expenditure kept within approved budgetary limits and controls. Mr Mampeule represented the company to the media and other key stakeholders and is responsible for making recommendations to the Board on significant policy and strategy choices as well as the approval of annual financial statements. The role includes proposing to the Board where additional capital is to be raised. He is also charged with taking the necessary steps to establish an effective Company Secretarial function. This includes ascertaining that the company’s statutory records, e.g. registers of Board members’ directorships and interests in contracts are maintained. Mr. Mampeule ensures that all Company’s activities, agreements, and Board decisions are within the terms of existing agreements.

Assembled and led a leadership team in the design and adoption of a five-year strategy, consolidation of the Group’s profit trajectory, and positioning of the organization among the top service providers in the world. Generally recognized as having put the Institution on a sound strategic and operational footing. Mr Mampeule made extensive headlines in the local and international media as a result of taking firm positions against poor governance and corruption at the institution.

In addition to overseeing that proper governance principles are adhered to, I helped the Fellowship carry out its mission of supplying much needed materials to the needy through out Southern Africa.

Had overall leadership and management responsibility of the Employee Benefits division of Old Mutual South Africa, covering investments, retirement funds administration, as well as life and disability assurance. Accountability involved developing and implementing the strategy and business plan of the division with over R70bn of assets under management. Responsibilities included delivery of growth and return on equity targets, provision of world class service to customers, leading the company and industry transformation (business and employment equity), delivering efficient capital management while complying with required reserve levels, retention and growth of client base and the overall development of staff. Mr Mampeule also served as a member of the Old Mutual South Africa executive committee and maintained offices in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Carried the ultimate accountability for the financial, commercial and technical viability of the R590m turnover airline with a workforce of 540. Overarching responsibilities included strategic positioning of the airline in the highly competitive aviation industry, transforming the business to ensure a sustainable profitability and growth from a feeder operation to a regional carrier of choice, and attainment and maintenance of appropriate governance of the company. Was responsible for managing the delicate relationship between parent company Transnet, major carrier partner and franchisor, SAA, and the government as the overall shareholder through the Departments of Public Enterprises and the Department of Transport. Played industry-level leadership roles at the airline association, focusing on issues of competitiveness and transformation. Direct areas of accountability include flight operations, and aircraft maintenance, sales, marketing, and customer service; HR, finance, safety and security, quality assurance, and public relations

Led the Board as it pursued it's mandate of exposing the various aspects of the aviation industry to disadvantaged communities and learners.

Assumed the bottom-line responsibility for the R480m turnover iron ore export business, OREX, a business unit of Spoornet with a workforce of 850. Main responsibilities included capital planning and strategic positioning of the business unit for (1) global competitiveness within the globally competitive commodity export industry, (2) restructuring and positioning the business for a possible private-public partnership (PPP), and (3) ensuring improving and sustainable profitability of the business that, prior to Mr Mampeule’s involvement, was earmarked for possible closure for economic non-viability. Effective June 1998, also charged with additional responsibility for the branding and franchising of Spoornet operations internationally (mainly in Brazil).

Through this entry-level senior management position, Mr Mampeule served as an assistant to the Regional Manager and shared responsibility for the overall performance of Spoornet in the Durban region. Served on the Company’s Regional Board. Specifically responsible for the Port/Rail interface, Infrastructure Maintenance, Durban and Pietermaritzburg Area Management, Key Customer Portfolio Management, Human Resources, and Special Projects.

Developed and delivered Human Resources Development Programs. Oversaw the design and implementation of a database to co-ordinate the relocation and placement of USAID-sponsored South Africans returning home after undergoing undergraduate and graduate studies in the USA. This appointment was an extension of a part-time consultancy to Africare Inc. that started in September 1993 in Washington, DC (USA). Responsibilities included developing training materials and facilitating quarterly seminars for Africare’s Career Development Internship (CDI) Program. Deliverables included the co-facilitation on “Confidence, Assertiveness, and Coping (CAC)”, a seminar designed for USA educated South Africans preparing to re-enter the SA working environment.

Conducted technical research and statistical analysis for the university’s curriculum development and production, student services, and marketing of tertiary-level working adult/distance learning courses. Responsible for the analysis of student evaluation of courses and faculty and presentation of results and improvement/compliance recommendations to Departmental Head for implementation.

Assisted professors in grading, tutoring, and conducting review sessions for courses in Management Information Systems, as well as Policy and Politics.

Held this post-graduate studies internship with the South Africa Desk of the IRRC, an Investment Research Company that advises US private and public Retirement Funds on global investments opportunities. Conducted research on social, economic and political conditions in South Africa. Authored two articles, “Post-Apartheid Investment Vehicles” and “A Review of the African National Congress (ANC)’s Economic Policy.” Made inputs on the Institution’s recommended investment policy to its members at the height of the USA/SA sanctions debate.
