Leading lifecycle, service level, asset, contingency and risk management for critical infrastructure with knowledge.My responsibilities included overseeing the management of water, wastewater and storm water systems to provide, develop and secure in the long term safe, high-quality services for the more than 1.1 million residents and functions of the Helsinki metropolitan area. The role included synergy driven cooperation with several authorities and municipalities as well as businesses. Significant focus areas were promoting comprehensive risk management, new operating models, knowledge management and digitalisation of processes, asset management as well as sustainable lifecycle management. My greatest takeaways were learnings related to management of change, understanding of the influence of organizational culture and the importance of an environment enabling people’s development through continuous learning. This serves as a sustainable and responsible foundation for effectiveness and efficiency in the operating environment.

Developing a sustainable consulting business through commitment.Responsibilities included expanding and developing the business and know-how of water supply, stormwater and floodwater management and watershed planning. The work was related to multidisciplinary, cross-administration projects for cities and municipalities and the private sector, as well as the bidding for and delivery of the projects and operating in the customer interface.The greatest thing in leading the unit with profit and loss responsibility and with profitably growing revenue was to see the development of peoples’ skills and their ability to take increasing responsibility. My main learning was the importance of leadership in making the continuous learning possible.

Cross-infrastructure projects with a synergy focused mindset.Delivering multidisciplinary and water engineering projects related to water supply, sewerage, and storm water management. Projects were often related to different aspects of sustainability, such as impact assessment and the development of areas, land use and traffic, geotechnics, environmental planning, and consideration of environmental values. The most valuable learnings for me from the wide-ranging projects, which varied widely in scale, was to see how successful integration and cooperation between disciplines turned to awesome designs and plans. Approximately one hundred projects brought valuable experience in coordinating different views and needs, and fitting work into a larger whole.

Preparing for future needs with passionate research. Coordination, project management, and research in large-scale co-operation projects. The highlight was innovation and development of new solutions based on multidisciplinary expertise to achieve resource respecting procedures and operating models. For me most rewarding was sharing information about possibilities to enhance management of infrastructure networks and be part of creating an environment of continuous learning.
