  • Midlands 103
News Reporter, Production Assistant, Programme Maker
    Midlands 103 2008 - 2011
    County Longford, Ireland
During my time at Shannonside & Midlands 103 radio I was involved in many tasks & responsibilities: News reporter, production assistant, producer, presenter, sports journalist and documentary maker. My time in media came about when the financial crash of 2008 happened. At that point I wanted to upskill in a different direction. I went back to college and studied media production. I was always fascinated with different forms of media and have a creative side that I wanted to explore. At the end of the course I was given a months work experience in Midlands 103 located in Tullamore. It broadcasts to counties Offaly, Westmeath, and Laois. This led to me working full time in the role of reporter in news and sports, news reader, and programme producer and editor. It was a teamwork and self regulating environment at times, always busy but very satisfying. The aspects of myself that propelled me in this work area were, perfectionism, dynamism, resilience, hard work, teamwork and quality. I produced a weekly show called The Parish, I explored small villages and towns in the region and listened to ordinary people tell extraordinary stories. I focussed for a month on charitable organizations. One of these was Brainwave, an organisation that helps people and families with the effects of epilepsy. I presented and produced my show about Brainwave in Tullamore and won an International award for my efforts. It was a fantastic honour and I was deeply grateful to the honsetsy shown by the participants. My time in media has many fond memories and I made a great number of friends there.
  • Pj Mcloughlin Builders
    Construction Site Manager
    Pj Mcloughlin Builders 2004 - 2008
    County Longford, Ireland
I moved back home and applied for job as setting out engineer with PJ McLoughlin Builders in Longford town. A smaller and more family feel to the organisation than that of Laing O Rourke. I really flourished in this environment. The team in McLoughlin's office work tirelessly to procure work and we were very busy for the four years. I was lucky to work on notable projects such as Roscommon Civic Offices, Virginia Secondary School and my favourite O Connor Park Stand in Tullamore, as I'm an avid GAA fan. I progressed from setting out to site management and project management, over seeing weekly client meetings, method statements, production reports. Managing workers and sub contractors whilst surveying all elements. I learnt a lot more about the different facets of construction and construction management with Mcloughlins. The economic crash happened and the whole sector suffered a downturn. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with McLoughlins where key attributes were adaptability, attention to detail, understanding all the different aspects of construction management, diplomacy, leadership, teamwork and being client focussed. Working within budgetary confines was a major learning curve for me during my time with McLoughlins.
  • Laing O'Rourke Centre For Construction Engineering And Technology
    Senior Site Engineer
Laing O'Rourke Centre For Construction Engineering And Technology 1999 - 2004
    Kent England
From 1999 to 2004 I was employed by Laing O Rourke. After working with smaller contractors I had been in college studying surveying and construction. Laing O Rourke were a sector leader in construction and engineering. I became an engineers assistant, in old terms, a chain man. In this role I learnt about surveying, setting out, maths, equations, the office workings on a construction site, checking drawings, checking details, archiving, dealing with workers, understanding the flow of construction information. A brilliant firm to learn from, extremely pressurised environment, deadlines and finishing projects correctly and before time was paramount. Check twice cut once was a matra I learnt working with this firm and I never forgot it. Worked on notable projects in UK and Ireland and progressed within their ranks. From assistant to junior to senior engineer. Working on such projects like Bedfont Lakes in UK, to Belgard Square Tallaght, one of the most challenging and interesting projects was the Sports and Fitness Centre in Irishtown Dublin, a track and field athletics ground where the tolerance in millimetres was 2 -3 mm as it was built to European Athletics Standard. A curved building was part of the office structure also on site. I learnt a lot from my time with Laing O Rourke a company that demanded perfection at all times.
