Kieran Sharp retired in 2018 after almost 42 years' service to the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB). During that time, he worked on a wide range of pavement, materials and asset management research projects for Austroads, State Road Agencies, the National Transport Commission, industry, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the OECD. He was the Manager of the Australian Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) program during the 1990s. He was a member of many Austroads Project Steering Committees and Reference Groups. In 2003, Kieran became the first member of ARRB to receive an Austroads Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to Austroads. He was a major contributor to the establishment of the National Asset Centre of Excellence (NACOE)and the Western Australian Road Research and Innovation Program (WARRIP).Kieran is the Chair of the Technical Committee of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA) and a co-opted member of the Governing Council. In 2012, he was elected an Honorary Member of REAAA. In 2021, he was the first co-recipient of the inaugural REAAA Hwang Award for his ongoing commitment and dedication to REAAA. He is also engaged in cooperative projects between REAAA and PIARC.In 2013, he was awarded the Roads Australia Award for Technical Excellence. He was the principal author of the book 'ARRB: The First 50 Years', published in 2011, and co-author, along with Dr Max Lay and Dr John Metcalf, of the book 'Paving Our Ways - a History of the World's Roads and Pavements', which was published by CRC Press in 2021.He was also ARRB’s Technical Editor and a mentor to young professionals, both within and outside ARRB, and this is continuing in his retirement.
