About Kieran Mcandrew
Careers evolve. Mine began in environmental management for water and rail projects. Then I started dabbling in emergency management. Through that role I was heavily involved in several major Clarence River flood disasters. Now flood mitigation is my main professional focus.The high standard of floodplain management in New South Wales has its origins in the big Hawkesbury flood of 1817– when Governor Macquarie issued a warning still valid today – he said people should expect the “inevitable consequences of their wilful and wayward habit of placing their residences and stock-yards within the reach of the floods”. Today it’s hard to imagine living without good floodplain management. Human safety would suffer. The environment would suffer. In the floodplain industry I like to think that our mandate is to protect human safety and the environment – continuing the important work first started many years before us. While major achievements have been made, the important work in this field continues in both developed and developing nations…
