Postgraduate Researcher, Phd Candidate

Exeter, Devon

Project title: Assessment of anthropogenic noise impacts on fish reproduction and survivalProject summary:The underwater environment is teeming with natural biotic and abiotic sounds that are essential to survival in marine ecosystems. However, marine noise generated by human activities can interfere with this natural soundscape. Consequently, mounting evidence demonstrates that anthropogenic (human generated) noise has the potential to negatively affect a wide range of marine taxa. The aim of my PhD program is to assess the impacts for fish of two types of anthropogenic noise (impact pile-driving and motorboats) on key life-history processes (reproduction, embryonic development and larval survival) that have direct fitness and ecological implications. Through research-driven mitigation, the negative impacts of noise on fish can be reduced, thus improving population resilience.

Postgraduate Researcher (Supervisors: Dr Stephen Simpson And Prof Andy Radford)

Swanage, Dorset

This postgraduate research was collaborated with Natural England and was aimed at investigating the effects of pile-driving noise on black sea bream (Spondyliosoma cantharus) nesting in the United Kingdom. During the height of spawning season, our research group assessed the impacts of anthropogenic noise on this commercially valuable and understudied fish species (annual landings of around 200 tonnes in the U.K.).My personal contributions to this project included: methods and study design, risk assessment, ethics approval, literature review, behaviour measurement, field work (boat handling and SCUBA diving), noise trials, data collection, analysis, final reporting, and dissemination of results.

Research Intern (Supervisors: Dr Matthew Witt And Dr Stephen Pikesley)

Penryn, Cornwall

The project was collaborated with Natural England and investigates the effects of increased human activity on estuarine bird distribution within the Tamar – Tavy Estuary. This was achieved mainly using GIS and other spatial analysis techniques to assess potential associations between changes in bird distribution and human activity along the Tamar River. My personal contribution mainly consisted of mapping of motorboat and buoy density (human activity) using QGIS, as well as some spatial analysis.
