About Kiersten Slater
My trusted team is innovating safety in chemical manufacturing, where my role as a Process Safety Engineer involves developing relief systems and conducting rigorous simulations to ensure overpressure protection. With a foundation in Chemical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Texas A&M University, my analytical skills are crucial in evaluating complex scenarios and crafting technical reports to uphold industry standards.Previously, as an Undergraduate Research Assistant, we pushed the boundaries of detection technologies by enhancing "Nanopaper" for Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, potentially revolutionizing the identification of harmful substances. This research experience, coupled with my current responsibilities, underscores my commitment to safety and efficiency in high-stakes environments.

Process Safety Engineer
Current- Developed relief systems for large-scale chemical, oil & gas manufacturing plants- Utilized simulation software to model and identify overpressure scenarios based on process data, ASME codes, and API standards- Created technical relief system reports to explain overpressure scenarios, calculations, and overall system adequacy
Undergraduate Research Assistant
In this role, the research I conducted involved the development and improvement of “Nanopaper” which is chemically synthesized by adsorbing silver nanoparticles onto glass microfiber filter paper. The constructed Nanopaper provides Raman signal enhancement for tested analytes in a Raman Spectroscopy machine. This occurs through Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), which is an effective method for sensing dilute analytes. Through the improvement and development of this research, this method could potentially be applied to the detection of harmful substances/chemicals, such as the detection of fentanyl laced with drugs in, otherwise, difficult detectable amounts.• Communicated closely with a distinguished doctorate professor and graduate student to develop experimental procedures for testing.• Increased the efficiency of the chemical synthesis of silver nanoparticle paper and optimized the concentration of chemicals used through trial and error of alternative cost-effective methods, which resulted in a reduced reaction time by 85%.• Intensified the Raman signal of caffeine on silver nanoparticle paper through its combination with 44 different citrate buffer solutions prepared at varying pH levels of 3.0 to 6.0.• Operated a Raman Spectroscopy machine for experiments and compared and analyzed the resulting spectra to previous trials, determined a signal peak enhancement of 250 intensity (arb. unit) to 1100 intensity (arb. unit).• Compiled and organized data into spreadsheets and flowcharts using MATLAB and Excel, created slideshows to demonstrate research findings, and presented results to the professor and research team to help identify new research paths.
