Hello, I am Kierstyn Schmidt. I am in my second year at Wilmington College working to obtain a BS in Agriculture with a concentration in Animal Science/Pre-Vet. I am looking for a summer 2023 internship. I grew up selling eggs to the teachers at my school from our egg-laying hens. For the last seven years, my family has been producing and selling maple syrup and has gotten into selling honey from our bees as well. I am also very involved with equine. Growing up with horses, my love and passion for them has developed, so much so, that I want to specialize in equine veterinary medicine. I always knew I wanted to be a veterinarian, but it was until a couple of years ago that I want to specifically be involved with equine. One of my show horses was injured at a show. The situation became so severe we had to rush her Rood and Riddle. We did not know the outcome of the situation, but there was one point where euthanizing her was on the table. Luckily that was not the end result due to the incredible doctors we had. Going through this entire process inspired me to want to focus and hopefully specialize as an equine vet.I have used my skills in animal care by mainly working with equines at a facility where I train. I assist my trainer at shows by helping get horses ready to show, feeding, and cleaning stalls. I have also started giving younger kids lessons on my horses. Learning patience has been a very big step when working with younger kids because they do not always understand the task at hand. I truly enjoy every hands-on experience I get when working with animals because it has increased my knowledge of horses, chickens, and dogs. I have been very involved in 4H for eight years. I have held officer positions within my club as Secretary and Vice President. I was also involved in JFB and held a junior superintendent position in the equine department. Through these years I have learned teamwork and have gained leadership experiences as well as communication skills. At Wilmington College, I am involved with WC Aggies and Sigma Alpha, where I am currently the leadership chair. I am someone who is not afraid of hard work. I am truly excited to gain more hands-on experience within agriculture while in college and in future internships.
