Playing role playing scenarios with health care professionals in order to give feedback on their communication.

I have four roles at the Academic Medical Center related to medical residents (known as aios) who are training to be general practitioners.• I train aios throughout their three-year residency on communication skills, shared decision making, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I place a specific focus on handling difficult topics like domestic violence, terminal illness, pain management, and medically unexplained symptoms.• I act as mentor for a group of aios, providing feedback on professional interactions and coaching them in their career goals. I provide corrective feedback and dismiss aios from the program if necessary.• I lead small group sessions called Intervisie where aios review and assess their patient interactions and learn to direct their emotions to improve their medical care.• Finally, I’m a member of the selection committee that accepts or rejects candidates for the aios program.

I believe that people are more happy, motivated and productive when they have learned to communicate effectively, because they have the freedom to say what is important without destructive subtexts or clumsy misunderstandings. This “white noise” in communication can lead to unhappy, unproductive employees. I also believe that trainings should be fun so that participants attend enthusiastically and willingly, and leave the training feeling inspired to implement what they’ve learned.The purpose of Kiki Hohnen Communications is to teach effective communication skills in a way that is fun, simple and easy to implement.

Easylaughs is an English-speaking improv comedy group. We do weekly shows at the Muziekzaal in the Crea Cafe. I perform in shows, both at the Crea and at corporate events, and teach workshops. These can be workshops for our improv students, but also corporate workshops.

I started out as a Teacher's Assistant and grew to be a teacher for the courses Medical Psychology: Children and Adolescents, Culture and Health Psychology, and Medical Psychology: Adults and the Elderly.I organize the course, search and invite guest speakers (psychologists and doctors working within the field of medical psychology or culture and health), design and correct exams, design workshops, supervise and correct papers, and supervise students throughout the courses.In 2009, I organized a conference on the differences between research and practice in intercultural psychology with my colleagues Annemarie Kolk and Samrad Ghane.In 2007, I was part of a study trip to Morocco with a group of psychologists (working both in research and practice), a psychiatrist, and two cultural anthropologists. The trip's goal was to get a clearer picture of the organization of mental health care and to experience first hand how Moroccans with mental health problems seek help. We visited psychologists and psychiatrists, but also various alternative healers who used religious healing methods.Among other duties on this trip, I acted as treasurer and as an interpreter (Dutch-French).In 2009, I was invited back to Morocco with my colleagues Samrad Ghane and Gerly de Boo by the board of the Rabat-Sale hospital, and taught a series of workshops on diagnostic instruments. We organized classes on building diagnostic instruments and translating existing instruments. On this trip I also acted as an interpreter (Dutch-French).

Teaching for the new Master Gedrag en Gezondheid. Classes and workshops on health-promoting behaviour change, motivational interviewing, and cultural differences between patient and health care professional.

Individual and group counseling of people addicted to nicotine, including people suffering from tobacco-related illnesses. Multidisciplinary approach, collaboration with Pulmonology. The treatment includes face to face sessions, telephone calls and homework aimed at changing behaviour, and advice on the various medicinal options to quit smoking. I use Motivational Interviewing to increase patient's readiness to change, and techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help learn new behaviour.I have been involved in setting up and implementing a group for chronically ill people wishing to improve their physical fitness whle quitting smoking (collaboration with Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation Medicine, Ergotherapy and Social Work)
