Edith Cowan University - All 3 Campuses

I was appointed to work on two special projects that engaged students as change agents aid in enriching the student engagement and improving student retention. The two projects I developed where:¥ The Student Ambassador Project where I mentored and guided two final year undergraduate students employed as ambassadors to identify, implement and manage an area of educational delivery or campus life in need of enhancement. ¥ Peer 2 Peer Head Quarters (P2P-HQ) – I completed a literature review, consulted with staff from various areas within the university and undergraduate students to develop an ECU centered model for peer assisted learning. The intended outcomes of the P2P-HQ were aligned with the Higher Education Standards Framework (2015) and the ECU strategic plan (2016). The P2P-HQ (now SALT) is a drop-in center where students can obtain peer assistance with navigating software commonly used at ECU and digital literacy generally. Students were also offered support and assistance with assignment work and referencing and were referred for specialist help including counselling as required. Launched in February 2017, P2P-HQ was operational across all three ECU campuses. It was embraced by the student community and academics who began referring students to our service. Approximately 500 students, predominantly in their first year of study, sought assistance in the first 14 weeks of operation. Two unsolicited emails from students praised the service for providing them with support and guidance when they were ready to withdraw from their studies.A final analytical report, highlighting the success of the project and recommendations for further improvement, was submitted to the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) and the Library in July 2017. The project was handed to the library in August 2017 and continues to run under the acronym SALT.
