About Kim Herrmann

I'm an observational astronomer who studies "nearby" galaxies, ones that are within about 30 million light years as opposed to ones that are billions of light years away. My thesis research was on using planetary nebulae (i.e., dying low mass stars) to probe the disk mass of nearby spiral galaxies (like our own Milky Way Galaxy). In 2008, I joined the LITTLE (Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes) THINGS (The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey) international team studying how stars form in 41 nearby tiny galaxies and I started studying a larger sample of 141 galaxies in up to 11 different wavelength regions, for a total of 775 profiles. At Penn State Mont Alto, I have a fantastic time teaching Physics and Astronomy, advising some great students, and singing in the campus choir class. I love participating in astronomy outreach and have recently started to present astronomy talks for the general public in addition to hosting star parties on campus.
