About Kim Abram
The best career is one that makes a positive difference in the lives of others and engages communities. My work as a career practitioner and adult educator has been rewarding because it's allowed me to do both. Some of my most enjoyable experiences have involved cooperating with service providers to advocate for others and develop stronger communities. For more than 20 years I’ve had the honour of providing guidance, coaching and classroom facilitation to people pursuing educational and career goals. A focus on social justice, diversity, and transformative learning informs my decisions when developing workshops and coaching clients individually or in group settings. As a facilitator, coach and mentor, I enjoy contributing to the self-efficacy of others and working with clients to develop strategies for overcoming obstacles and reaching goals. Having recently completed a Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education, I look forward to partnering with others in community, civic or corporate training and development in support of a skilled, diverse and dynamic society.

Case Manager / Career Facilitator / Outreach Employment Counsellor / Instructor
CurrentWhen you wake up in the morning and you smile at the thought of going to work, you know you are in the right place. That has been my good fortune during my career at ISSofBC, and why I continue to work here while taking on other interesting contracts. My role as a career practitioner supporting the career development of newcomers to Canada puts me in contact with amazing people and incredible life stories daily. Through individual consultations and group workshops, I have provided career planning and job search services to 2000+ clients. I support foreign-trained professionals and skilled workers, helping them understand the local labour market. I also support and coach multi-barriered clients in the development of job-related essential skills (e.g. language literacy and communication skills, computer and social media literacy), job targeting and career strategizing. During my career I have developed and facilitated workshops and webinars, created lesson plans and handouts, and implemented group activities to meet client and program goals. I foster collaborative counselling sessions to discuss clients' goals and develop action plans, incorporating coaching, tools and resources to assist clients in reaching their goals and to decrease circumstances of marginalization. A favourite aspect of my work involves encouraging women returning to the workforce after long absences (http://issbcblog.org/author/kim-abram/). I also enjoy mentoring and providing in-house coaching and training to new career practitioners and co-workers, or contributing to professional development during staff meetings. I feel strongly about professional development, not only as an educator of others, but through my own lifelong formal and informal learning.
Student Consulting Writer & Researcher Assistant (Contract)
As a result of my research and coursework at the University of the Fraser Valley, I was invited by the Head of the Adult Education Department to participate on a team with her and other adult education leaders who were awarded a research grant for the BC CAT Transfer Innovations Project–Adult Education discipline. Under the direction of the Adult Education Articulation Committee, I performed research and writing to contribute to the project deliverables: Literature Review, Environmental Scan, Comparative Table of Core Learning Outcomes, and Draft/Final Reports. Through participation in the project, I honed my research skills and developed my knowledge of core learning outcomes and transfer pathways in adult education in BC. I also grew my knowledge and understanding of current and emerging trends in adult education, specifically related to facilitation, instructional design, and the role of technology in formal, non-formal and informal contexts. The research contract completed in December 2018. Afterward, I cooperated with the team to present the research at the CASAE and CSSHE conferences at UBC in June 2019. These experiences stimulated my interest in continuing contract work in post-secondary, government or corporate environments.
Writer & Reviewer (Contract)
A subsidiary of the University of BC, Paragon Testing Enterprises Inc. provides English language proficiency testing for permanent residence in Canada, Canadian citizenship, academic purposes or acceptance into professional organizations. As a freelance writer/reviewer, I followed strict protocols to write new test items for the CELPIP language assessment, and reviewed/edited the work of other writers. While fulfilling the terms of the contract, I demonstrated the ability to efficiently manage a weekly workload and to meet production timelines. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the professional staff at Paragon, and benefited by increasing my ability to develop creative and effective multiple choice test items.
Job Search Instructor (Seasonal-Prior To Graduation)
In this role, I developed and taught interactive workshops on cover letters, resumes, reference lists and interview skills for the Digital Graphic Design students each spring, prior to graduation. I assessed, acknowledged and taught beyond learners’ current understanding, and made dry topics fun by using stories, examples, games and humour. To meet the specific needs of this group of learners, I tailored course material to their profession.
