York Learning Jul 2021 - Present
    York
I lead adult education classes in painting and drawing. I designed and lead a series of courses in abstract art for adult learners at different stages in their artistic journeys."Ways into abstraction", "Further journeys in abstract art" and "Abstract art unleashed".My classes were taught in-person, whilst I lived in York, and are currently taught online. Students are encouraged to develop their own visual language through experimentations with drawing and painting using a range of wet and dry media, as well as mixed media techniques. The courses cover observational drawing, colour theory and drawing techniques, painting techniques in acrylic and mixed media approaches, as well moving towards more intuitive and expressive ways of making art, including abstracting from visual and sensory stimuli, and thinking through the process of making. Each session is supported by looking at the work of both modern and contemporary abstract artists, and I suggest further materials for students to revisit in their own time as well as recommending contemporary exhibitions to visit.I monitor student’s progress by setting homework tasks and I provide tailored individual feedback that is age and experience appropriate.

I work across drawing, painting, sound, performance and video, both as solo practice and in participatory projects that are embedded within community settings. My artistic practice stems from my background in participatory performance art, and my fascination with maps. Broadly speaking, my works are abstract representations and re-imaginings of spaces and places, framed by a material and conceptual investigation into layers and layering. Central to my work is the notion of a body in a space. I’m interested in the process of transforming the physical, material, sonic and felt properties of specific locations – as well as the stories and memories they embody – into artworks.I create paintings and drawings that are made via a process of layering, overlapping, re-working and erasing, as if simultaneously constructing and excavating an imaginary landscape. Each new layer is a response to the last and the work emerges as a trace of my dialogue with the materials. I work with field recordings to create site-specific music, audio installations and live performances. I create video works that document notions of home and other peoples experience of places, and I use drawing in participatory performances and workshops as a tool to map embodied experiences. Please visit my website for full portfolio and CVwww.kimbalbumstead.com
