About Kimberly Null

Environmental chemist with broad experience working in diverse environments, including Antarctica, Gulf of Mexico, east and west coasts of the United States. My overall research interest is to investigate the impact of watershed modifications on water quality and ecosystem health and to conduct educational outreach to local and scientific communities about water quality issues. My specific study areas in aquatic environments include:• Understand the impact of climate change and urbanization in coastal watersheds on water quality and ecosystem and human health• Monitor groundwater discharge and water quality in coastal environments and the impact of groundwater flux on coastal ecosystems, such as estuarine and reef environments• Investigate biogeochemical processes in sediments effecting groundwater fluxes and cycling of organic carbon and nutrientsSpecialties: Applying field sampling methods, nutrient analysis, water quality, groundwater in coastal environments

Doctoral Research

My specific objectives were to quantify different nitrogen forms from submarine groundwater discharge and sediment regeneration in order to model the role of groundwater nutrient flux to the overall ammonium budget in the Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina for future management. Fieldwork involved installing temporary wells, collecting cores for nutrient.

Stanford, CA

Instructed graduate course titled Coastal Contaminants.

Sep 2011 - Dec 2011

Postdoctoral Researcher

Investigate groundwater discharge in San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, and Yucatan Peninsula and evaluate the associated contribution of constituents, including trace metals, nutrients, and dissolved organic carbon to overlying waters to assess the impact on water quality, phytoplankton blooms, and ecosystem health.
