Dr. Kimberly Powell is Professor of Education, Art Education, Music Education, and Asian Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. and an Affiliate Fellow with the Arts and Design Research Incubator at Penn State and the Pennsylvania Center for Folklore. She is currently the Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Education at Penn State. As an arts educator and qualitative methodologist with a focus in educational anthropology, her work focuses on the arts as practice and methodology for social change. Her research, motivated by concerns about marginalized communities, focuses on: (1) community-based arts practices; (2) contemporary art practices engaging in socially or culturally relevant pedagogy and research; and (3) contemporary ethnographic and arts-based research methods.She has published both within and outside of the field of art education in order to create a dialogue across disciplinary borders about the arts in and as everyday life. Her work appears in journals such as Anthropology & Education Quarterly, International Journal of Education & the Arts, Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, Qualitative Inquiry, and Studies in Art Education, and several book chapters pertaining to arts education, comprehensive education, and ethnographic methods. She co-edited The Routledge International Handbook of Intercultural Arts Research and Building interdisciplinary and intercultural bridges (2016): Where practice meets research and theory with Pamela Burnhard and Elizabeth Mackinlay. She is currently working on a book based on her StoryWalks research, an exploration into walking as an artful practice of placemaking, identity, and social inquiry.
