About Kimberly Richards

As a Human Factors (HF) and Systems Safety Engineer (SE), Kim has applied HF principles to the RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter, NASA Space Shuttle, the design of the Next Generation Crew Module-Orion, multiple Army Instrumentation/Simulation programs and the NASA Constellation Program. She began her career by providing testing and validation of the Army RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter LCD cockpit displays using usability studies to assess the pilot’s overall capabilities and limitations to provide an efficient and user friendly cockpit display. She also applied her systems expertise to Space Shuttle systems support and select ground processing tasks, where she used PFMEAs and PHAs to help identify, assess, and track risks/hazards in the process or system design. A major milestone was completed when she and a team of two other members designed and implemented the Human Engineering Modeling and Performance Lab, which provides an objective assessment and identification of the risks/hazards that are associated in the Space Shuttle Ground Processing tasks at Kennedy Space Center. As the Lead of the Human Engineering Modeling and Performance Lab at Kennedy Space Center, she provided a 3-D simulation and a detailed safety task analysis to show safety hazards and risks in ground processing tasks to help provide a safer and more efficient process. Kim’s most recent Booz Allen work includes leading the Safety IPT for the Air Forces's Global Broadcast Services (GBS) Program and acting as the System Safety Manager (SSM) for the program. Specialties: Human Factors, Systems Engineering, Safety Engineering, Currently a Certified System Safety Manager (SSM) for Global Broadcast Services, Air Force programs.

Booz Allen Hamilton Mar 2008 - Present
My role within Booz Allen Hamilton is to provide Human Factors and Systems Engineering professional services in the following areas: Constellation Technical Services Contract (CTSC)Systems Safety Engineer I performed a Functional Hazard Analysis, fault tree analysis and evaluated CxP Ground Integrated Hazard Analyses (IHA) on NASA’s Constellation Program. My efforts included the support of all Ground interfaces with various Constellation Projects, such as, Ares launch vehicle, Orion crew module, Ground Operations, and Mission Operations. My Hazard Analysis assessments also included external interfaces such as Eastern and Western Range, launch vehicle and payload processing, launch operations, and Orion re-entry/recovery activities.Joint Warfighter Test and Training CenterLead, Human Factors/Systems EngineerI led a team to implement an Army instrumentation system for the Joint Warfighter Test and Training Center that provides real time, unobtrusive, continuous test and evaluation of the soldier’s cognitive and physiological performance. I applied human factors engineering and risk management skills to this project by defining the system requirements to be more user-friendly, defining the system architecture, writing the Technical Capabilities Requirements Document, and identifying, assessing and managing risk of the project. Range Radar Replacement ProgramSystems Engineer and Task LeadI was the lead Task Manager role and developed and managed the Integrated Master Schedule, identified and managed programmatic risk, defined system concept and requirements, defined system architecture and assisted in the development of the Systems Requirements Document.
  • United Space Alliance
    Human Factors
United Space Alliance Jul 2004 - Feb 2008
    • Proposed, designed, and implemented the Human Engineering Modeling and Performance (HEMAP) Laboratory for USA’s Industrial and Human Engineering Department. Included: creating training procedures for HEMAP lab personnel use.• Served as the “Principal Investigator” for Independent Research and Development studies and emerged as a key leader in the HEMAP Lab, where I also applied previous project management experience. • Served as the Technical Volume Leader for NASA proposals while providing Human Factors expertise and analysis for future “Constellation” exploration systems architecture studies. • Provided human factors and systems engineering support to various Space Shuttle systems (Hydraulics, Aft purge air systems, Water Spray Boiler, Solid Rocket Booster Assembly, Payload Bay installation and removals) to incorporate modifications and design changes. • Investigated several Type A-D mishaps as a Certified Human Factors Mishap Investigator. Provided recommendations for mitigation of hazards to affected organizations through use of modified training programs and modules/courses. As a Human Factors Engineer, I assisted in development of training courses to provide a safer and more efficient process for the technicians.• Provided requirements development support to Ground Systems Design Engineering teams to existing flight hardware and equipment designs to ensure requirements were exhaustive, verifiable, and measurable. • L6S Green Belt Certification training and applied Lean Six Sigma methodologies to some KSC projects to measure efficiency and safety improvements in various organizations.
  • Sikorsky Aircraft
Crew Station Design: Human Factors Engineer
    Sikorsky Aircraft Aug 2003 - Jul 2004
    • Designed LCD cockpit displays for the RAH-66 Comanche Helicopter and assessed switch functionality and navigation in “Systems Statistics” and aircraft “Warning,” “Caution,” and “Advisory” (WCA) systems. • Responsible for the design, evaluation, and testing of cockpit displays and controls, anthropometrics and crew station layout. • Gathered information from the pilots and SMEs, where I developed and implemented the defined requirements into the Pilot Vehicle Interface Manual (PVIMS). • Obtained overall training in voice communications, radar, sensors, electrical system, weapons arsenal kit, Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) and overall system statistics and system health. All designs were evaluated to assure consistency and standardization within the PVIMS technical document. All designs were validated and tested via a Glass Cockpit, 12-way axis Full Motion Based Simulator.
