May 2022 - Aug 2022

Mechanical Design Sip Intern

Greenbelt, Maryland, United States

I supported a design reference mission for a lunar satellite within Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) by creating a computer aided design of the spacecraft using SolidWorks. Once finished, this model consisted of 430 total parts, 60 individual parts, and 15 sub-assemblies. I incorporated movement into my model, as this aids in the visualization of operations. I also created an animation of this movement using a motion study within Solid Works. Finally I completed multiple renders of the top level assembly. A unique aspect of the model I created is that it utilizes features such as equations, variables, and properties, to make both parts and assemblies "smart". This saves time during the design process, as iterations are made frequently and need to be implemented quickly. During this process I learned how to keep myself on a realistic timeline by continuously re-assessing the scope of my project. Although I originally only planned to create one sub-component of the satellite, my hard work paired with my ability to learn and excel at new concepts allowed me to finish the assembly in its entirety. I also gained the experience of knowing who and when to ask for help, as I was often faced with tasks that were unfamiliar. Finally, I gained valuable teamwork skills as I was a part of a roughly 30 person internship cohort (SCaN Internship Program)

I conducted research and data analysis on the technological advancements of total solar irradiance instruments over the past 40 years, and eventually presented my findings at the end of the summer. I also worked with arctic NSIDC data on a separate project, where I learned some python and used various data analysis methods to interpret this arctic data.
