I established Lighthouse to manage the portfolio of businesses I owned at the time. By centralizing the accounting, marketing, and human resources functions for these companies, we eliminated duplication and created synergy. Lighthouse was also in the business of launching and managing new businesses; it was a resource and an incubator for firms that were passed over by traditional venture capital concerns. We invested in businesses with potential and built them up under Lighthouse.

In the early days of computing, I left the University of Pennsylvania before graduating to start a company that sold hardware and software. Bill Gates had introduced Microsoft Windows 1.0 in 1985, and it was a very exciting time. This technology revolution catapulted CSS into becoming a systems integration company. Within months of our launch, we were supplying computer equipment and software, installing networks, and providing onsite support. These newfound areas of expertise grew quickly and were soon spun off into their own operating organizations. This led to the creation of Lighthouse Venture Management and the CSS businesses that exist today.
