Profile bio

About Kim Devaney

My lifelong love of art defines who I am and has compelled me to share that joy with budding artists. Over the past four decades I have actively sought out opportunities to create and provide innovative art programs for children in five schools and communities that didn't have these programs. My experience as a grant writer has sometimes funded these programs. It has been my great privilege and pleasure to lead children on a magnificent journey of creative exploration.

Art Teacher

Robbinston And Charlotte, Maine

I have taught art in two schools in district AOS 77. Neither school had an existing curriculum. Both schools were grades PK4-Grade 8. I was a long-term substitute teacher at the Robbinston Grade School. When I realized that the children didn't have an art program, I approached the principal and offered to do a weekly art day designed for ages 4-14. My offer was eagerly accepted. Drawing on my previous teaching experiences, I immediately put a plan in motion. Classes were designed to meet the interests and capabilities of each age group. Every student created their own portfolio of work, just as professional artists do. We had a wonderful exhibit and reception for the artists at the end of the year. The community was invited. It was a gratifying and memorable experience. My position ended because the school was closed the following year by the superintendent. One year later, I was approached by the principal of the Charlotte School about providing an art program for that school. Charlotte Elementary School was unique in that there was a high percentage of very talented young artists. Some had already been designated gifted and talented. In addition to my regular classes, taught by grade, I added a gifted and talented class to meet the special needs and interests of those students. Once again, I had every student in the school create their own portfolio of work. We had mid-year and end of year exhibits, with receptions to honor the artists. During those exhibits, the building was like a magnificent museum of children's art. All of the receptions were well attended by the community, staff, and families of the students. Show less
