About Kimea Lawrence, M.A

Kimea is a spoken word poet, writer, dancer, and storyteller who combines their passion for social justice and creativity to produce work that ignites conversations surrounding Black feminism , queerness, disability, and abolitionist praxis.Kimea graduated from the University of Cincinnati Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in English Literature and a concentration in creative writing in 2019. They were a transfer student at UC, and before their studies, they studied at Tiffin University and Sinclair Community College. They became acquainted with creative techniques used for multiple storytelling genres throughout their undergraduate education. After finishing their undergraduate program, Kimea took a year off to work in film production and non-profit. They then applied to multiple graduate programs and settled on DePaul University in Chicago. They graduated Summa Cum Laude with distinction in June of 2022. As a master's student in DePaul University's Women's, Gender, and Sexuality program, they were the first student in their department to create a film for their thesis project. During this program, they combined their artistic skill with their theoretical knowledge to create a project that reflected the nuances of Black joy from Black women and Black queer folks. Their studies focussed on Black feminism, abolition, and queer of color critique. They are hard-working, adaptable, and quickly settle into new environments. They best exemplified their adaptability in their ability to graduate from their undergraduate program a year early while still establishing strong connections— despite changing schools and majors twice.Kimea truly believes in productive, entertaining, and insightful content creation, and they continue to work on their craft and learn as much as possible!
