I recently saw a slide in a presentation that really struck me. It depicted a satirical venn diagram made of different personality types and skills - where they overlapped, a specific job category was suggested. Of the few jobs mentioned, I was excited to see that HR was one of them. That is, of course, until I found that HR came at the intersection of being 'OCD' and 'Heartless' [insert deadpan face here].Now I know this was meant to be all in good fun. And I get it. Back in the day, Human Resources was there to keep law and order. However, as I've forged my own path in the talent space, I've found that modern, successful HR departments represent a sincere departure from that way of thinking. As an HR/Talent/People/Organizational professional, I choose to lead with empathy and embrace ambiguity. I have worked as an HR generalist, recruiter, benefits admin, HR business partner, etc, and the common denominator in having success in each of these roles can be directly tied to my ability to treat people like... people.It is my job to construct and organize an environment that allows people to work their best. I spend my days figuring out what individuals need to do that. I do this through honesty, transparency, and, to the surprise of some, heart.
