This includes, but is not limited to, pre-transplant evaluations, preparation and presentation to the medical review board, coordination of organ transplant and living donation process, education of the in-patient transplant recipient including discharge teaching and planning for outpatient care and post-operative follow-up. The key to the program’s success is an experienced, highly skilled team that includes surgeons, cardiologists, LVAD coordinators, staff nurses, operating room personnel, social workers, dieticians, rehabilitation specialists, and many other professionals.The LVAD helps the left ventricle – the heart's main pumping chamber – circulate blood throughout the body. The device consists of a pump that is implanted in the abdomen, which has an electrical cable that connects to external battery packs. The packs are worn on the shoulders and electronic controls are worn on the belt.Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center is among the nation’s first cardiovascular centers to offer LVAD's – the Thoratec HeartMate® XVE, the HeartMate® II LVAD, Jarvik and HeartWare® – for destination therapy and bridge to transplant for patients that suffer from end-stage heart disease.Texas Heart Institute was the first to successfully transplant a heart in the United States, first to implant an artificial heart in a human, and the first bridge to transplant with an LVAD. Additionally, THI assisted the first patient in the world to leave the hospital with an electric, portable, battery-powered LVAD.The LVAD Coordinator participates in the clinical management of potential and post LVAD patients in collaboration with physicians and a multidisciplinary team.
