CurrentYorkshire Coast 1779 Research Group Ltd is a not-for-profit company and was established in 2020 for the purpose of raising awareness of the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779 - when the American War for Independence came to the Yorkshire Coast - for the benefit of local tourism, heritage and culture, and educational purposes. Yorkshire Coast 1779 recognises that the event is of significance to all the communities along the Yorkshire Coast from Bridlington to Scarborough.Our "3 Mast Mission" is:-1. Outreach and Education2. LegacyThe Group of volunteers comprise of representatives from a wide range of local organisations:- Discover Yorkshire Coast, Yorkshire Coast BID – Love Yorkshire Coast, Filey Lifeboat, Filey Coastguard, Filey Sea Cadets ~ Past, Present and Future Cadets, Staff and Supporters, Filey Lions, Filey Tourism and Trade Association, Filey Bay Today, Scarborough Museums Trust – Rotunda Museum & Scarborough Art Gallery, and other local businesses and interested individuals as well as Filey Town Councillors, Scarborough Borough Councillors.Each year on 23 September we remember the Battle of Flamborough Head and the hundreds of lives lost on that day with a festival including dinner, pop-up heritage centre and a Sea Cadets parade.We are currently working on a 1779 Heritage Trail along the fantastic Yorkshire coast from Bridlington to Scarborough which tells the story of the Battle and its significance not only to the American War for Independence but how it affected the coastal communities and Great Britian.2029 will be the 250th Anniversary of this Battle, when Yorkshire Coast 1779 have an international extravaganza!OUR MISSION STATEMENTTo promote and raise awareness of the Battle of Flamborough Head 1779 for educational purposes and for the benefit of tourism, culture and heritage in the communities of Filey Bay.
