Greater San Diego Area

Coaching students with disabilities on finding competitive employment throughout the San Diego region. I work with students at Miramar, Mesa and City Colleges on creating effective resumes, honing interview skills and prepping them for the world of work. The students in the C2C program (College to Career) are achieving education beyond high school - from child development certificates to multimedia careers - and together we work to find each of them competitive employment in the field they are passionate about.

Supporting students with disabilities to achieve educational goals is a rewarding field that I have chosen. But providing additional assistance in preparing for the world of work is an added bonus to my job at Southwestern College. Coaching students to utilize accommodations as well as discovering the resources available on campus are two aspects which will lead to their success. But what I really enjoy doing is counseling and coaching students on their career goals. Paid employment, internship or volunteer experience, helping students prepare for competitive employment is not something that is typical for college students with disabilities. And I believe this is the population that needs the career coaching the most!People need extra assistance in preparing their resume, learning how to write effective cover letters and effectively network through LinkedIn in order to uncover opportunities. The Career Center at SWC offers many workshops and web resources, but so many of the students in DSS don't take advantage of these resources. I work with students on interest inventories, exploring career options, and then we interview role play. Interviews are stressful for everyone, and getting practice with someone who will provide valuable feedback in order to hone those skills is an invaluable service that students are provided through my career counseling. It's so exciting to watch a student go from "scared" to "confident" in the process of finding a job.

Conduct student interviews, explore student interests and counsel them in all facets of job search strategies. I assist students with resume writing, cover letters, building autobiographies and work portfolios, interview role playing and job retention strategies. Coaching students to build an effective LinkedIn profile in order to market themselves effectively online. I also teach clients on effectively using LinkedIn as a research tool. Instructing them on ways to research companies and organizations in the San Diego area, but also showing them how to find key people in an organization they really want to work for. This enables them to find employment opportunities in new cutting edge ways that are not typically available to persons with disabilities. Responsible for creating marketing materials in order to expand exposure of a Department of Rehabilitation cooperative program at the community college level called WorkAbility III. Collaboration with DSPS Counselors, Department of Rehabilitation counselors and community high schools and businesses; learn how to manage a caseload providing in-depth vocational guidance. Coaching and assisting students in their educational goals. People get lost along the way and for one reason or another, they end their high school education before they have completed their degree. For this reason, the Continuing Education program offers students assistance in preparing for the GED or another similar test that would allow the student to complete their high school degree so they can move forward in career aspirations. That could be a further degree at a community college or a job that requires a high school education. Either way, as a resource specialist, I help students find different ways of learning -- so they can practice math and writing and reading comprehension in order to pass the test.

Providing respite and personal assistance for persons with disabilities in a variety of settings as requested by them. Listening and then assisting either the person who is directly related, and/or family members who just need some additional help. Assisting with personal care including bathing, dressing, and of course meal preparation and ensuring they are drinking lots of water. I also help with washing dishes and doing laundry .... I hate sitting around idle. Walking and talking is another favorite pastime as a caregiver - so often people just need to be away from their families and in an outdoor setting with someone who can just listen to them. Being heard and actually listened to is so important for everyone, but especially for persons with disabilities. So often, I have found, that they just need to talk to someone who has no prejudged ideas about them.

Provide educational coaching to individuals with disabilities to ensure successful transition from high school to college, improving social and academic skills; teach students study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies; help students prepare for tests; ensure students know available resources on campus; identify, develop, or implement intervention strategies and create tutoring plans based on IEPs for students.

Assessed current and developed new marketing strategies for clients, specifically incorporating social media and reputation management.
