About Kimberly Patch
I'm a writer, editor, user interface expert, and musician. I spend my time making information easy to understand and software easy to use. I’m the project manager for the investigations unit at the nonprofit news organization The Conversation. We publish longform investigations reported and written by combinations of academic researchers and investigative journalists. I’m responsible for workflow and logistics, and I also do editing, fact checking, web production and video editing. Since 2014 I've been working with interactive transcripts that can be shared at the sentence level while preserving context. I architected the InSite workflow and publishing system for Duke University's Rutherfurd Living History site, and helped PBS Frontline implement a similar system for The Putin Files. Details: patchontech.com/interactive-transcriptsI was a longtime invited expert for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Accessibility Initiative. I've been using, thinking about and working with speech input software since 1994. I wrote an add-on for Dragon speech recognition software that makes it much easier to control a computer by speech. One of my goals is to make software more efficient and easier to use for everyone, including people who aren't programmers and people who have disabilities. I do this, in part, by leveraging the assistive technology community as a test bed for universal design.I founded a software company and launched a news publication. I have more than 20 years of experience writing and editing for wire services, newspapers and magazines.Much of my writing is about science and technology, including many research topics that underlie universal design. These include touch, speech, gesture and brain-computer interfaces, human behavior, cognition, network theory, linguistics, evolutionary computing, natural language processing, and augmented reality. Details: scriven.com/kimpatch I also play music, which informs everything. Details: scriven.com/music
