Communication • Mentoring • AdvocacyMy work centers on improving access to education, mentoring, and research for students with disabilities and the marginalized communities that intersect with disability. Currently, I teach College Composition to high school students. My classes are centered on project-based learning units that incorporate real-world writing opportunities and incorporate research and reading assignments on related topics and themes. For example, my students are currently working on a set of classroom informational posters to supplement the set currently used at our school. They are using primary and secondary research to support their poster designs and emails to the administration arguing for the inclusion of their posters. As a writing teacher, I should also be a writing practitioner. I am currently looking for a part-time editorial job where I can use my technical communications skills for a nonprofit organization. I value audience-centered communication and accessibility in my writing and editing, and I excel and breaking down complex information into easier-to-understand texts for specific audiences and purposes. As a researcher and disability activist, I most recently oversaw the transition of Inclusion Week at my high school from a staff-planned event to a student-led event, using a $3100 Inclusion Week mini-grant from the VCU Partnership for People with Disabilities to support inclusion and leadership training for students preparing to lead the 2022-23 event. In addition to continuing this event next year, I look forward to starting a student-led disability club based on the DREAM model. I have also spoken and written on disability, communication, and education at various national conferences, events, and publications.I enjoy and seek out collaborations with others who strive to create change for people with disabilities in education, employment, and research.
