I am the co-director of the Immune Discovery & Modeling Service, where we provide innovative, state-of-the-art technologies to measure drug levels, detect proteins, and identify rare cell types at levels not detectable by conventional clinical instruments. Our mission is to help improve the hematopoietic cell transplant and other cell transplant intervention by exploring how individual differences between patients and overall cellular intervention strategies impact the efficacy of these therapies.

I led a group of 10 scientists, and we carried out small molecule/drug screening, investigated molecular signaling pathways, protein binding and enzyme analysis, cell-based assays, performed iPSC culture and related research, myeloid cell isolation, culture and phenotypic analysis, and developed and performed other research assays.

I served as the point of contact at the Faculty of 1000 for clients, scientists, postdoctoral/graduate student associations and other professional groups.I also maintained communication with these groups to learn about their experience with F1000 services and explored ways to support them. I worked to develop and implement programs that helped users of F1000 products share their knowledge with others.

My research in Dr. Nicholas Carpino's lab centers on identifying the negative regulatory role of STS-1 and STS-2 in T regulatory (Treg) cell development and function. My current work builds on my previous experience in autoimmunity by moving into a murine system that will allow me to address questions regarding regulatory T cell development and function. Specifically, I plan to analyze the morphology, phenotype, cytokine profile and suppressive activity of Treg cells in the absence of STS proteins, in addition to assessing the suppressive activity of Sts1/2-/- Treg cells during disease progression of colitis in mice. My present research will be a complement to my previous work, and will provide me with new conceptual and technical training in the area of immune regulation before I embark on an independent research career.

My research efforts in Dr. Berhane Ghebrehiwet laboratory included elucidating the role of C1q in regulating the monocyte-to-dendritic cell development. Additionally, I studied in detail the extra- and intracellular pathways involved in C1q-DC signaling, and how gC1qR, the receptor for the globular heads of C1q, is anchored on the cell surface.
