I joined Dr. Anderson's lab as an undergraduate research assistant in the Spring of 2013. I was trained to assist in the high-throughput production of human transcription factor antigens for the NIH Protein Capture Reagent Program. My duties included transformation of DNA, making media, starting expression cultures, monitoring ODs, harvesting, and running SDS-PAGE gels to assess expression levels. I was also trained in protein purification, preparing lysates and loading them onto an AKTAxpress for HisTrap purification. Going into my senior year, I began working on an individual research project. The project is about identifying post-translational modifications in the human transcription factor FOXP2, and studying the effect various mutations have on PTM patterns. As part of this project, I learned how to design a gene construct, run PCR reactions, perform Quikchange mutagenesis and InFusion cloning, prepare vector for lentiviral expression, run western blots, run ELISA and analyze the results. Throughout my research experience I have frequently searched and analyzed the literature, and use it as a resource to guide my experiments. I have also helped to train the new undergraduates in the lab.
