Research FellowThe University Of Edinburgh Nov 2010 - Jun 2011Multi-scale Modelling to Maximise Demand Side Management - DESIMAX was a multi-partner, multi-disciplinary project funded by RCUK. The academic collaborators were Edinburgh, Nottingham, Strathclyde and Heriot-Watt universities. Work started in October 2010 and concluded in April 2014. During the initial stages of the project I was a research fellow at Edinburgh working on domestic demand energy modelling. The overall aim of project DESIMAX was to develop the whole-systems approach necessary for the full employment of DSM within the overall energy supply system (from generation to transmission, distribution and utilisation), in which ensuing transformations are targeted at the points of maximum impact and all system elements are fully optimised for these changes. I led the development of a stochastic model of domestic energy demand based on user behaviour that can be used for DSM planning and analysis. The open source model is available at https://github.com/kiprakis/DESIMAX

Assistant ProfessorTechnological Educational Institute Of Crete Nov 2007 - Oct 2010Heraklion, Crete, GreeceResponsible for course development and delivery of modules in the areas of Electrical Power Systems, Industrial Control and Embedded Systems. Supervised over 15 degree projects in the areas of Control, Power & Energy. Conducted research in industrial control, robotics and energy. Contributed to the modernisation of the Electrical Engineering undergraduate course syllabus and to the development of two new postgraduate (MSc) courses: Energy Systems and Industrial Automation & Robotics, organised by the departments of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering within the School of Applied Technology. Was member of the preparatory committee for the External Quality Assessment of the Department of Electrical Engineering. -
Research FellowThe University Of Edinburgh Jan 2004 - Jan 2007Undertook research within Work Package 4 of the SuperGen Marine research project, which commenced in October 2003 following the award of £2.6 million under the EPSRC's SuperGen Programme. The academic and industrial partners within the consortium included: The University of Edinburgh (lead institution), the Robert Gordon, Heriot Watt, Lancaster and Strathclyde Univesities, as well as more than 20 national and international marine energy and electricity supply companies. The objective of WP4 was to ensure that the electricity generated by Marine Energy Converters (MECs) is sufficiently controllable, and of a quality, that it will integrate with the electricity supply network without unduly increasing the cost of connection, production or delivery. To this end, my work was focused on the investigation of the impacts of increased marine energy penetration into the electrical power system on power quality, modelling of the conversion of marine energy (wave and marine current) to electricity and development of control algorithms that allowed increase of the capacity of marine generation that can be connected to weak distribution networks. Intelligent control of variable speed, doubly fed induction generators as well as high pressure oil transmission systems coupled with hydraulic accumulators were considered as a means of power conditioning.During the final months of the project I also got involved in WP13 (Dissemination & Outreach), for which I developed the first version of the project website (www.supergen-marine.org.uk), as well as an open access "essential reading" publications database, still accessible through the website. Finally, I contributed to the write-up of the Phase-2 of the project, by developing Work Stream 7 (Advanced Control/Network Integration of Marine Energy Converters).
