PhD dissertation topic: Molecular characterization of periplasmic nitrate reductase (Nap) and its role on diauxic lag in denitrifying bacteria.- Genetically engineered Paracoccus pantotrophus deficient in periplasmic nitrate reductase gene and tested the hypothesis that presence of this gene is responsible for shorter lag periods. - Developed a FISH probe to detect the presence of periplasmic nitrate reductase in denitrifying bacteria.- Developed a mechanistic model to relate the rate of nitrate uptake to the activity of membrane bound and periplasmic nitrate reductase in bacteria that contains both these enzymes.- Mentored several undergraduate and graduate students conducting short term projects.
