The Regional Economic Development (RED) programme partnered central government, local government, and regional stakeholders such as iwi (Māori tribes). During my contract with NZTA I further developed my understanding of the mechanics of government, developed cross-agency and stakeholder relationships and learnt the importance of maintaining strong working relationships.

This role required: communication and conflict resolution, working with clients who have diverse needs, triaging, multi-tasking, using Medtech IT system, operating the phones, communication with stakeholders, and working on the frontline.

Working as a Privacy and Official Information Editor in 2015, I developed important skills in applying key legislation, working with clients, and managing complex and confronting information. In dealing with Child, Youth and Family files, I learnt important capabilities such as digesting and interpreting large amounts of detailed information and making significant judgment calls in regards to the said information. I observed the conflict of a mechanistic system working ‘with’ a human system.

As a Tutor for KURA 111 and MAOR 111, I developed skills in session planning and teaching basic to intermediate te reo Māori. As KURA 111 specifically focused on te reo Māori for Early Childhood teachers, I was able to develop creative ways of supporting this learning and demonstrate how it could be used in an early childhood setting. Tutoring expanded my leadership, communication, and people skills.
