About Kirk Brundage

Kirk Brundage is a classically trained percussionist who went on to play in Brazilian carnaval.Originally from upstate New York, Kirk earned a Fulbright to Denmark and an MFA from CalArts, before winning the International Solo Music Competition in Munich. For many years, he was an 'extra' with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and member of the Maelström Percussion Ensemble. Kirk also gave many solo appearances around the US and Europe. But for over 15 years, he has traveled to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil—to study the roots of samba, the sacred music of candomblé, and the latest carnaval innovations. Kirk has played in Brazilian carnaval with Bloco Afro Olodum, at the Latin Grammys with pop-star Daniela Mercury, a show with “The Police” drummer Stewart Copeland, and a recording project with Grammy-artist Beck. LA-based, Kirk is a REMO artist, has taught at UCLA, and appeared at PASIC. He has published a book series through Alfred, and self-released two percussion CDs. Kirk’s work has been reviewed in Modern Drummer and Percussive Notes magazines—as well as featured on the Brazilian Television program, Planeta Brasil.

It is with tremendous excitement that I announce the release of two different solo-percussion CDs. The first recording is of the experimental music I played in Europe, as a Fulbright scholar, many years ago. The second CD was made for the 2012 PAS Convention (in support of my book series “Afro-Brazilian Percussion Guide”), and is dedicated to my teachers.
