Elected officer for the International Science Council's Committee on Data.

Serving on the Center's executive team, responsible for the strategic direction, management and funding of SDSC's ITSS Division. The division designs, deploys and operates high-performance production systems, and provides services supporting SDSC researchers, UCSD faculty, researchers, staff and departments; multiple other UC campuses; extramural funding agencies; and industry partners. Systems and services include SDSC's 19,000 sq ft regional colocation facility, the multi-petabyte Openstack cloud (Swift) and NFS-based storage systems, an Openstack Compute cloud, Cloud Consulting and Systems Integration team, enterprise networking, state-of-the-art internal cyberinfrastructure for SDSC staff and programs, virtualization and Unix platform teams and desktop support.

Serve on the leadership team for the NSF-funded Big Data Innovation Hub serving the 13 western states from Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and everything west to Hawaii and Alaska. The West Big Data Innovation Hub (WBDIH) builds multi-sector and multi-state partnerships to address societal challenges with Big Data innovation.

Works with a team of developers and domain scientists to provide scientists and researchers of all disciplines with the necessary infrastructure, both cyber and social, to find, reuse and publish data. This involves understanding how scientists interact with data and the data lifecycle in many different domains of scholarship, and engaging with communities of researchers to strengthen relationships between NDS and domain scientist communities from individual researchers to global consortiums. Provides leadership in the community and collaborates with other researchers locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Provides overall leadership, oversight and management of the National Data Service high quality, integrated cross-functional plans for projects as well as financial oversight and stakeholder communications. Leads complex, multi-disciplinary projects utilizing leadership, management, and decision-making expertise. With team, responsible for refining high-level plans into detailed work specifications, providing management and direction of project staff, helps to translate community requirements into appropriate cyberinfrastructure development, oversees project reporting and activities, and has the overall responsibility to ensure that staff and resources are directed efficiently toward achieving National Data Service goals within specified timeframes.

Founding member

Founding Chair of the systemwide effort to enhance electronic accessibility at the University of California.Created annual inventory initiative to quantify and describe accessibility priorities across all ten campuses, medical centers and affiliated locations. Oversaw development, integration and reporting that in concert with new process saw a marked increase in web accessibility. Collaborated to develop system IT Accessibility policy, member of University of California IT Policy and Security committee.

Manage technical staff of thirty organized into nine units encompassing the majority of academic campus computing systems including: instructional web development group, web application and user interface development team, instructional computer labs (virtual and physical), software licensing, strategic IT projects, user support, accessibility team, faculty support group and large-scale infrastructure group. Project manager on enterprise system selection, adoption, integration of student collaboration, communication and learning management systems.Streamlined instructional computing process and associated applications resulting in hundreds of saved man hours per academic cycle.
