Hello! I’m Iain. For the last six years or so I was a director, tech lead and software engineer at Bamboo Creative, a digital agency based in Wellington, New Zealand. I’m currently continuing to contract ad-hoc to Bamboo, but I’m also taking some time to reflect and think about the next thing. We worked primarily with the Typescript ecosystem, building web experiences for impact organisations and charities. Our preferred tech stack was Nextjs, Tailwind, React-Query, Postgres, Zod, deployed to Vercel with additional AWS / GCP services.I’m one of the ones who went through a web development bootcamp (Dev Academy, 2015). Prior to switching to software full-time, I worked as a GIS analyst and cartographer in various government departments in New Zealand.I’m now living in Canberra, Australia, and have been working remotely across global timezones for the past three years.

Software Developer / ConsultantEnspiral Dev Academy Jul 2015 - Dec 2016Wellington & Wairarapa, New ZealandI worked for Enspiral Dev Academy as part of a pod within the Consulting team. This involved contracting both internally and externally, building a variety of websites, automation processes, tools, visualisations, and general web applications. I primarily worked in Javascript / NodeJS, and subscribed to the substack-philosophy of using / building composable, small modules wherever possible.External contracts have included:- http://annualreport.rbnz.govt.nz: D3 graphs on top of Orchard CMS- http://consciousconsumers.org.nz: D3 visualisations with React / Redux as part of a business dashboard (not public)- http://co-nnection.co.nz: bespoke app using in-house stack (React, Redux, Feathers, Tcomb, Knex etc) -
StudentEnspiral Dev Academy Apr 2015 - Jun 2015WellingtonI enrolled into the April intake at Enspiral Dev Academy in order to both solidify basic development principles I had picked up through my own research, and explore new concepts. I completed the initial nine weeks of remote learning during nights and weekends while I was still employed at the Christchurch City Council, and then moved to Wellington to study on-site.The course consisted of a mixture of solo, paired, and group projects. I was part of the C# / .NET stream, of which the central focus was becoming familiar with the ASP.NET framework. I developed both MVC and Web API projects using Visual Studio, including a fully separate Web API backend deployed to Azure that my group used for our final course project. The front-end for that project was a Phonegap app running on an Android phone with KnockoutJS. I was involved in both front and back-end development, and as the project had evolved from my initial pitch, I also took on an informal leadership role within the team.I took the opportunity during the course to involve myself as much as possible with Javascript - both front-end frameworks and libraries like React and D3, and back-end technologies like web sockets with Node. -

I was delegated specific planning areas of responsibility to be the first GIS point-of-contact for, which meant a significant amount of liaison work with DPR chapter leaders.I became familiar with Geomedia Professional over my time with the Council, and designed new workflows with the included utilities. I also gained experience writing scripts and data modelling with SQL Server, which I used daily. -
