Steve Forbes, President and CEO, Forbes Inc. and former presidential candidate, says the need for financial literacy is imperative. But yet, I find that the lack of financial literacy is a common occurrence.When people understand how to manage their finances, closely held belief systems, which may not be true, are often replaced with facts. How money works is not complicated, nor does investing require unnecessary risk. The adage, no risk, no reward, is not always true. There are many ways to increase a person’s financial potential while significantly reducing their exposure to risk. One way, the easiest way, in my opinion, is to identify how inefficiencies can create deficits. Simply recouping inefficiencies, in essence giving money back to themselves, it’s possible for people to achieve greater financial success, potentially even exceeding their goals with little to no additional out-of-pocket cost or risk. It’s a holistic approach to managing and growing assets. Once people understand how each piece of the puzzle works, it’s easy to integrate disparate parts into a cohesive and flexible plan. It’s an imperative that YOU understand the financial implication of each move before YOU make it.Most people work 40 to 50 years and need money throughout their life while trying to save for retirement. In my experience, these same people are often dismayed at how little they saved. Many of my clients choose to work with me to follow this process. They are taught to evaluate the guidance I provide and seek transparency in their financial choices, enabling them to make the right decisions. The educational process is a means to an end. Financial literacy is ultimately about YOU. That you should be part of the process of managing your money. You should understand who’s got your money, where it is, and how it’s doing.
