Personal Programme AssistantReach Personal Injury Services Limited Jun 2008 - May 2010Various U.KThe role of a Personal Programme Assistant required a combination of Psychological and Occupational Therapy skills, in order to stabilise and improve aspects of a brain-injured client's daily life. I worked one-to-one with clients who experienced serious brain injuries and as a result suffered from various mental health issues such as attention deficit, memory deficit, problems with executive functioning and motivational issues, as well as physical impairments with sight and balance. It was necessary to not only be personally motivated but it was essential that I was able to facilitate motivation in my clients in order for the rehabilitation programme to progress positively and efficiently. The nature of the client’s injuries meant that they were often rude, manipulative and insensitive, it was necessary therefore for me to be able to stay calm, patient and focused. These factors often made my work incredibly challenging and tested my personal skills to a great extent, however it was vital that I remained enthusiastic and committed to this role. A lack of dedication or a complacent attitude may have resulted in the client losing confidence in themselves and the programme, a risk of increased negative perceptions by the client and the possibility of withdrawal from the programme entirely. In addition, the client could be resilient towards the programme and would often decide that they did not wish to continue with rehabilitation. During these times, it was essential that I remained determined and focussed on my passion for wanting to help someone improve his or her quality of life, without letting my personal opinions interfere.Regular supervision sessions provided the opportunity to discuss the rehabilitation programme, as well as allowing me to discuss any aspects of the programme I felt out of my area of expertise. I did not see this as a weakness on my part, but a way of learning and developing professionally
