Artists Assistant/Technician

Rachael Long Sculpture

Norfolk

I compare Rachael’s process to life drawing, trying to picture the whole sculpture while keeping an eye on the details of what you are working on at that moment. Working from scrap metal to describe the form of an animal means constantly attempting to see something in each piece and tie this in to the work as a whole. Each new shape reflects on previously 'finished' parts and at the same time lays a foundation for future pieces, so that nothing is decided until everything is finished.

Freelance Artist

Kit Collins

Norfolk, Uk

Working as a freelance artist after my degree I divided my time between various projects and my own work based in a studio in Norwich. As a freelance Artist I designed props/activities for museum education. This involved designing objects with museum educators that functioned well for their creative and educational use and were built to take the day to day wear and tear of public museum activities.I found designing props for museum events very engaging and enjoyed making creative resources that have become part of family educational activities.I also ran a children's workshop as a visiting artist at The Mo: Sheringham Museum on the Norfolk coast. I chose to take inspiration from the lifeboat museums beach location; creating a 'Museum of Today' where visitors exhibited their finds from the beach in the museum. They could also make small bowls made by working around the shape of rocks using paper and masking tape.

Visual Dialogues Mentor

Norwich Castle Museum

Visual Dialogues is a project run by TATE Britain and public art institutions around the UK, bringing artists and young people together to develop artistic approaches. My role was to mentor the project and people involved giving them my experience as a recent graduate and developing artist. This was an amazing project to work on and had great benefits for the young people involved, showing them the relationship between artists and institutions at an early stage and giving them the experience of developing as an artist alongside others. The project led towards a successful public exhibition at the Norwich Castle Museum (8th January - 15th May, 2011).
