Precision pediatric drug discovery using organoid models of disease

iPSC cardiovascular applications

Over 6 years I merged “-omic” technologies with human iPSC models to find molecular regulators of development and disease. My toolbox was broad: patient- and disease-specific iPSCs, non-human primate iPSCs, molecular biology (e.g. CRISPR gene editing), the major –omic technologies (RNA-, ChIP-, HiChIP-, ATAC-seq, etc.) and more recent single cell sequencing methods. Funded by a 5-year career development award (NIH K08), I led postdocs, grad students and technicians and published 4 first-author papers during this period. Of these, our discovery of BANCR's role in human cardiac development and disease was the most significant (Wilson et al. Dev Cell 2020).

After subspecialty training in Molecular Pathology, I cut my teeth as an attending physician during the emerging clinical genomics era at Stanford. This included clinical next generation sequencing of solid and liquid cancers, and DNA variant interpretation reporting.
