About Kinga J. Rogowska

As a doctoral candidate at the University of Warsaw's Doctoral School of Humanities, I am deeply involved with the Centre for Applied Rhetoric. My academic journey began in Polish philology, where I obtained my bachelor's and master's degrees from the Faculty of Polish Studies. My current research delves into the diverse aspects of rhetoric, including applied rhetoric, rhetorical criticism, argumentation studies, corpus rhetoric, and competitive and educational debates. My teaching philosophy prioritizes active learning, primarily through structured classroom debates. This approach has proven effective with a broad range of audiences, from primary school students to business leaders and educators, encouraging engaging dialogue and understanding across diverse perspectives.I contributed to the international "Rhetoric for Innovative Education" research project to refine rhetoric teaching and learning methodologies, address skill gaps, and enhance student competencies and teachers' rhetorical skills. My contributions include authoring chapters in two open-access, multilingual textbooks designed to demystify rhetoric for students and educators alike. My commitment to advancing my field is evidenced by my research being published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at leading conferences, fostering critical discussions within the discipline. As an active member of the Polish Rhetoric Society, I strive to elevate the profile of rhetoric as an independent academic discipline.Furthermore, my dedication extends beyond the academic realm into science communication. I am passionate about demystifying rhetorical studies for the general public, aiming to close the gap between scholarly research and its practical applications in society. This effort underscores the significance of rhetoric in enriching everyday communication and understanding.

  • Uniwersytet Warszawski
    Doctoral Candidate | Linguistics
Uniwersytet Warszawski Oct 2019 - Present
    Warszawa, Woj. Mazowieckie, Polska
As a Ph.D. student in Linguistics at the University of Warsaw, I am deeply immersed in exploring the rhetorical genre of competitive debate through my dissertation titled "Competitive Debate as a Rhetorical Genre." My research adopts the Rhetorical Genre Studies approach, treating genre as a typical social action based on recurring situations. I employ a diverse set of methodologies, including genre criticism, source analysis, corpus studies, experimental research using surveys, and ethnographic studies in the realm of rhetoric in situ.My research aims to (1) create a scholarly monograph on competitive debate in its various forms (educational and sport) and formats; (2) reconstruct the figure of the ideal debater and their rhetorical competencies; (3) demonstrate the relationship between genre awareness and the awareness of educational/developmental goals of debating; (4) explore differences in debate evaluation between existing assumptions and judging practice, including the influence of judging philosophy on the shape of competitive debates. The study encompasses three debate formats: Karl Popper debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and British parliamentary debate, selected for their differences in speech duration, number of participants, speaker responsibilities, prior knowledge of the thesis/topic, questioning mode (open or fixed), and judging criteria. This comprehensive exploration advances our understanding of competitive debate as a rhetorical genre and sheds light on its educational and developmental implications.Through my PhD journey, I am committed to bridging the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical applications of rhetoric in competitive debates, aiming to enrich both academic knowledge and practical debate practices. I want to connect with professionals and researchers interested in language, persuasion, and education dynamics.
