During my internship at Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased materials, I contributed to an ongoing research on biomaterials as tissue substitutes. More specifically, I investigated the mechanical and biocompatible properties of polyvinyl alcohol biofilms as a substitute for elastin, found in native heart valves. For production and analyzation of these artificial materials, I used different kind of methods; polymer synthesis, recombinant DNA technique, UV-crosslinking, thermogravimetric analysis, Soxhlet extraction and biaxial tensile testing.

During this collaborative internship between the group of 'Immunoengineering' and 'Soft Tissue Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering' (STEM) at Eindhoven University of Technology, I completed my master thesis. For this thesis, I did research on the role of macrophages in the host-body response. More specifically, I investigated the influence of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions on the polarization state of macrophages in microdroplets. To realize a matrix inside microdroplets, I used a thermoresponsive PNIPAM hydrogel.To execute this research, I used different kind of techniques to culture, encapsulate and analyse these immune cells; cell culture and differentiation, microfluidics, replica molding, cell staining and Flow Cytometry.
